CAMACOL AND ITS PROGRAMS

CAMACOL Briefing Paper
2012-2013

Hemispheric Congress of Latin Chambers of Commerce and Industry
CAMACOL is proud to be a partner with Miami Dade County on issues which have direct economic impact to our community and state.  Our year-round mission is to establish commercial linkages, develop business opportunities and sponsor activities which create and retain employment for our community.

CAMACOL’s ability to leverage funds is tantamount to our ability to create and or retain jobs in our community.  The County’s investment in CAMACOL generated the creation and or retention of over 1000 jobs in our community.    Every job created and retained includes increases in compensation costs other than wages, rents, profits, and other types of non-compensation income.   The ratio of GDP to total employment in the economy is $105,000 .  Therefore, we delivered approximately over $1.2 million dollars in revenues to our recovering economy.   As such, the County’s  investment in CAMACOL delivers cost effective results.
Deliverables:

CAMACOL has worked diligently in partnership with the Miami Dade County  to target activities that create and retain jobs for our community and State, and foster economic development.   Through its Hemispheric Congress,  CAMACOL has delivered a unique approach to economic development.  No other organization in Miami Dade County or the State of Florida has this international infrastructure,  which enjoys a 34 year track record and is a key partner in our community  enabling the development of linkages which have  translated into the creation of jobs and revenue for our community and the State.

Activities focused on Job Creation and Retention

In the wake of the current economic crisis and its effect on key sectors, overseas business has been instrumental in keeping the South Florida economy from greater distress, and CAMACOL’s Hemispheric Congress has been an active participant in addressing this issue.

Deliverables

•  CAMACOL’s activities have helped to retain more than  1000 jobs in our community;

• During the past fiscal year CAMACOL provided technical and business development assistance to 10,315  small/minority businesses in the international business sector; a 50% increase since the past fiscal year.

CAMACOL’s Hemispheric Congress & Miami Media and Film Market was able to convene over 500 visitors to the event(s)  A figure which is especially significant during this faltering economy and which translates into revenues ;  as such,  CAMACOL’s Hemispheric  Congress had a total of 150 non-local overnight visitors (from other Cities, States and Countries)  for the 4-day event;  according to the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau Overnight Visitors to Greater Miami and the Beaches Average Daily Expenditures are $2,050.90/per person;  the Hemispheric Congress generated an average of, $307,635.30.

• Since 2008 we generated well over $375, 826,000 in export sales which translates into the creation and retention of jobs;

• Our Florida Trade program sponsors an incubator center where small and minority start-up and new to export companies are provided with office space, technical assistance, materials, which enables the company to grow and develop new markets, especially during these difficult economic times.

• Our Miami Media and Film Market  also includes  an  industry incubator where production companies are provided with office space. Productions  usually hire over 3000 individuals during a production cycle, as was evidenced in the recent lease negotiations with the City of Miami where CAMACOL played a strategic role. Fox has credited CAMACOL whose strategic efforts  led to the lease extension with the City.

• The CAMACOL Film Program and our Miami Media and Film Market has fostered the creation of new South Florida based industry companies that in turn are hubs for Florida jobs and economic expansion and  has assisted well over 125 Florida based firms to establish direct contacts with industry companies.

•  CAMACOL’s Programs are focused on  fostering economic expansion and job creation.

• Since its inception our Miami Media and Film Market has established well over 12,000 direct business contacts in the film and entertainment industry.  Recently celebrated the 2nd Edition of the Market, and Co-production forum,  which is the only film market in the United States focused on Latin/Minority Film and Media, as part of the 33 Hemispheric Congress which was an outstanding success.  The Market focuses solely on the business aspect of the industry and includes film, television and digital media as well as the development of a vendors/service providers to the industry.

• The Congress and MMFM was able to sign a cooperative agreement with the Republic of Turkey and last year with the Dominican Republic, currently building Pinewood Studios, to use Miami Dade County service and product providers as they build their facility and then operate the same.  This year we signed agreements with the Ministry of Culture of Turkey, and Egeda, the Spanish Entity which works within the Americas to foster projects that reflect the diversity of this Hemisphere.  The focus of Egeda is Latin American content, but not limited to this content.

• We have also established linkages with the Republic of Turkey and India.  India is the largest producer of films in the world, and they are currently starting to film one of their largest and most important productions in our community. Production starts in January and they are also looking to conduct their post-production activities in our community as well; translating into job creation and retention.

• Our economic development efforts have also led to the establishment of a Bollywood/New York based company in Miami Dade County.  We are currently working on the total indirect costs this company has spent in our community.
